GI Safety Inductions
1. What is the difference between a Metalliferous mine and a Coal mine?
Coal mines extract coal. Metalliferous mines extract various hard rock minerals like: gold, copper, silver, zinc, and lead etc.
2. What does the term GI stand for?
Generic Induction.
3. Do I need to do the Coal GI Course or Metalliferous GI Course?
If you are going to work on a coal mine you may need to complete the induction course – GI Safety Induction- Coal Core and the Underground Elective. Nearly all coal mines in Queensland require a GI Safety Induction ‘Coal Passport’ to be produced before you are allowed on site.
If you are going to work on a metalliferous mine you may need to complete the induction course – GI Safety Induction- Metalliferous Core and/or Metalliferous Underground. Not all Metalliferous Mines in Queensland require you to complete a GI in Metalliferous Mining. However, some mines have made it a pre-requisite before you can enter their mine site. You should check with the mine you are going to be working at to determine if a ‘GI passport’ is a pre-requisite to work on their mine site.
Up to 1 July 2011 we will be running a combined Coal & Metalliferous Core GI Safety Induction . This means that if you successfully complete the course you will obtain both generic induction passports from the same course. Ring our office on 47289866 to enquire.
As of 1 July 2011, due to the introduction of Recognised Standard 11 – Training in the Coal Mining industry, the Coal and Metalliferous GI Safety Induction Programs will be run separtely. The Coal GI Safety Induction will be delivered over 3 days so that Recognised Standard 11 requirements can be met. The Metalliferous GI Safety Induction will continue to be a 2 day program.
4. Do I need to do the Use Portable Fire Fighting Equipment & Apply Initial Response First Aid Units?
Our GIQ Coal Core course, commencing in July, will encompass these units of competency within the 3 day program, along with a number of other units from the RII09 training package.
Our GI Metalliferous Core course will also encompass these two units of competency. Some Metalliferous mines will require you to have these units of competencies as a pre-requisite to work on their site. However, if you are not sure we recommend you contact the mine you will be working at to clarify if you require these extra competencies. The two unit of competency codes are as follows:
- PRMPFES05B Use portable fire fighting equipment
- RIIERR205A Apply initial response first aid
5. What will it cost me?
Course fees are listed in the relevant Course Outlines or you can obtain a costing by contacting our office on 07 4728 9866.
6. Will I need to do the Core Module only or both the Core & Underground Modules?
If you are going to be working on the surface only of a mine you will only need to complete the relevant ‘Core’ GI Safety Induction. If you will be working underground on a mine you will need to complete both the ‘Core’ & ‘Underground’ Modules of the relevant GI course.
If you already hold a current core passport you will only need to do the underground module. However, be mindful that your underground module will always expire at the time your core module expires.
PLEASE NOTE: We do not offer the GIQ Coal Underground module.
7. Can I book onto the Metalliferous Underground module only?
You may only book onto the GI Safety Induciton – Underground Metalliferous module if you hold a current Metalliferous Core GI Passport. You must present this passport when you book onto an Underground course.
