OPERATE A PORTAL BOOM CRANE

Course Description

The aim of this course is to provide the participant with the underpinning skills and knowledge to competently operate a portal boom crane to meet minimum training and assessment standards for the purpose of certification. This unit has been developed in accordance with the licensing and assessment requirements of NOHSC: 7019[1992].

Course Application

This unit is appropriate for those working in heavy industries and whom are required to operate a portal boom crane as a part of their job description.

Course Elements

At the end of this course the successful trainee will be able to:

  1. Plan work for the prevailing working conditions
  2. Conduct routine checks
  3. Check controls and lifting gear
  4. Shut down crane
  5. Secure loads
  6. Conduct trial lift
  7. Transfer load
  8. Erect and dismantle portal boom crane
  9. Carry out special operations with crane

Course Structure

On completion of the formal training a ‘Statement of Completion’ will be issued as evidence that the formal training has been completed. Before a Statement of Attainment can be issued by WorkSafe Connect, the learner must undertake specific on-the-job training in a work environment or replicated industrial work environment and undertake formal theory and practical assessment. The period of on- the-job training is approximately 120 hours. However, it is the decision of the supervising person who determines when the trainee is deemed suitable for formal assessment

Course Assessment

A formal assessment will be conducted which involves successfully completing the written knowledge test or assignment. This written assessment can be completed at the end of the theory training. The trainee must highlight this preference prior to the formal training as the assessment cost will be required to be paid prior to this assessment taking place. The practical assessment can only be completed once the on-the-job training has been completed and must be undertaken within 6 months of the formal theory assessment.

Course Duration

5 days consisting of 4 days in classroom covering theory principles and 1 day practical supervision (8am – 5pm)
