Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane & Conduct Lifting Operations
This nationally recognised training course provides participants with the practical skills and knowledge required to safely operate overhead and gantry cranes and conduct lifting operations in industrial workplaces.
This program is made up of the following nationally recognised units of competency:
- RIIHAN305D – Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane
- RIIHAN203E - Conduct Lifting Operations
Designed around real workplace applications, this course combines hands-on practical training with industry-relevant knowledge to prepare participants for lifting operations in the workplace.
Licensing Requirements
Licensing requirements for bridge and gantry crane operations vary depending on the type and capacity of crane being operated, with some crane operations requiring a High Risk Work Licence. In addition, conduct lifting operations covers the preparation and movement of loads where the lift has been planned and proceduralised. Depending on the lifting activities being undertaken, such as selecting and inspecting lifting gear, applying slinging techniques, or directing a crane or plant operator, a Dogging High Risk Work Licence may also be required.

You may be eligible to receive MSQ (Manufacturing Skills Queensland) funding for this course if you are employed by a manufacturing business with fewer than 200 employees and are working in the Brisbane or Townsville manufacturing industry.

- MSQ pays: up to $300.00 per eligible participant

Course Description
Our Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane and Conduct Lifting Operations course covers the planning and execution of lifting activities, the selection and use of lifting equipment, and the safe operation of overhead and gantry cranes. Practical training and assessment are conducted using industry-relevant lifting equipment and crane systems.
Throughout the course you will learn how to:
- Plan lifting activities
- Conduct pre-operational inspections
- Select appropriate lifting equipment
- Identify lifting hazards
- Apply safe slinging techniques
- Operate overhead and gantry cranes
- Move and position loads safely
- Communicate using recognised lifting signals
- Complete post-operational inspections
- Maintain lifting safety documentation
Course Delivery Options
Training will be conducted by one of our experienced trainer assessors who have industry currency, strong knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and industry standards.
All assessments are completed during the course – no assessment activities need to be completed prior to or post the training course.
Assessment generally includes:
- Knowledge assessment
- Practical observation
- Safe operation of the crane
- Lifting activities
- Equipment inspections
- Hazard identification
- Communication during lifting operations
Course duration can vary depending on participant experience, class size and delivery method.

Accreditation
Upon successful completion of the course requirements, students will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency:

- RIIHAN203E - Conduct Lifting Operations
Certificate delivery:
- Courses at our facilities: Certificates are issued on the day, with digital copies emailed to participants and employers (if applicable) the following business day.
- Courses at client sites: Certificates are issued within 7 business days, with digital copies emailed to participants and employers.
