About the Course

Students will learn the skills and knowledge to be able to provide a first aid response until higher assistance is provided.

The 1-day course is aligned with the Australian and New Zealand (ANZCOR) Guidelines regarding assessing a situation and managing casualties and others in an emergency.

There are no pre or post course requirements - all assessment and activities are conducted in the classroom.

The program is made up of the following nationally accredited units of competency:

HLTAID011 – Provide first aid
HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Please note, this is the competency outlined for First Aiders in the workplace, in accordance with the Code of Practice - First Aid in the Workplace. The Code of Practice states a First Aider should regularly refresh their knowledge and skills with industry best practice indicating every 3 years.

Who Should Attend

Anyone appointed as a first aid officer in the workplace should hold a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for Provide First Aid as outlined in the "First aid in the Workplace" Code of Practice.

They should also attend regular training to refresh their knowledge and skill.

Training also applies to anyone who wishes to or may be required to provide a first aid response.

CSQ Funding

You may be eligible to receive CSQ funding for this course if you work in the building & construction industry in Queensland.

If eligible, you will receive funding of $108.00, which means an out of pocket expense of $87.00.

Course Description

Key areas covered by this course include:

Assessing the situation and determining the required response
Infection control techniques
Basic anatomy and physiology
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED)
Managing casualties until medical assistance arrives
Reviewing the incident response

You will also learn responses for:

Unconscious casualties
Choking
Bleeding
Wound care
Fractures, sprains and strains
Burns
Shock
Stroke or heart attack
Anaphylactic reaction
Asthma
Venomous bites e.g., by a spider or snake
Swallowed poisons

Course Delivery Options

Training will be conducted by one of our experienced trainer assessors who have industry currency supported by a strong knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and industry standards.

It includes practical and theoretical activities to ensure that the training is engaging, interesting and relevant.

Students are required to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin placed on the floor, a factor that should be considered when deciding on this course.

Accreditation

To complete the course, students must successfully complete all assessments which are aligned with the national unit of competency.

All assessments are completed during the course – no assessment activities need to be completed prior to or post the training course.

Upon successful completion of the course requirements, students will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency:

HLTAID011 – Provide first aid
HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

How long does the course take and how is it delivered?

WorkSafe Connect’s First Aid and CPR courses are delivered face-to-face by qualified trainers and combine theory with practical, hands-on training. HLTAID009 (CPR only) typically takes around 2–3 hours, while HLTAID011 (Full First Aid) takes a full day. Training can be completed through public courses at our Brisbane and Townsville facilities or delivered onsite as a private group session for clients. All assessment activities are completed on the day, with certificates issued promptly after successful completion.

What’s the difference between HLTAID009, HLTAID010, and HLTAID011?

HLTAID009 covers CPR only and is the unit most commonly refreshed each year. HLTAID010 (Provide Basic Emergency Life Support) includes CPR plus additional life support skills, while HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) is the full qualification, incorporating both earlier units and a wider range of medical emergencies. Employers generally nominate staff to complete HLTAID011 (PFA), with HLTAID009 (CPR) refreshed annually.

Are there any legal requirements for First Aid and CPR training in the workplace?

Yes. Under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld), employers must ensure that an adequate number of workers are trained to provide first aid and that appropriate first aid equipment and facilities are available. CPR and first aid training are essential components of complying with this requirement. The Code of Practice – First Aid in the Workplace (Safe Work Australia) outlines minimum expectations for training frequency and staff coverage.

How long does First Aid and CPR certification last?

First Aid certification (HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid) is valid for three years, while CPR (HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) must be refreshed every 12 months to maintain currency, in line with recommendations from the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC). Employers should ensure workers remain competent through regular refresher training, as part of their duties under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld) to provide a safe workplace.
