Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane
This nationally recognised training course provides participants with the practical skills and knowledge required to safely operate overhead and gantry cranes.
This program is made up of the following nationally recognised units of competency:
- RIIHAN305D – Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane
Designed around real workplace applications, this course combines hands-on practical training with industry-relevant knowledge to prepare participants for crane operations in the workplace.
Licensing Requirements
Licensing requirements for bridge and gantry crane operations vary depending on the type and capacity of the crane being operated. Some bridge and gantry crane operations require a CB High Risk Work Licence under Australian legislation.

MSQ Funding
You may be eligible to receive MSQ (Manufacturing Skills Queensland) funding for this course if you are employed by a manufacturing business with fewer than 200 employees and are working in the Brisbane or Townsville manufacturing industry.
If eligible:
- MSQ pays: up to $300.00 per eligible participant
- You pay: Provided upon request

Course Description
Our Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely plan, prepare for, operate and shut down overhead and gantry cranes commonly used in industrial workplaces. Practical training and assessment are conducted using industry-relevant overhead and gantry crane systems.
Throughout the course you will learn how to:
- Plan and prepare for crane operations
- Conduct pre-operational inspections
- Identify workplace hazards and apply appropriate control measures
- Operate an overhead or gantry crane safely
- Move and position loads safely
- Communicate using recognised crane signals
- Conduct post-operational inspections
- Complete operator maintenance and housekeeping tasks
- Follow workplace procedures and documentation requirements
Course Delivery Options
Training will be conducted by one of our experienced trainer assessors who have industry currency, strong knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and industry standards.
All assessments are completed during the course – no assessment activities need to be completed prior to or post the training course.
Assessment generally includes:
- Knowledge assessment
- Practical observation
- Safe operation of an overhead or gantry crane
- Pre-operational inspections
- Hazard identification and risk management
- Communication using recognised crane signals
Course duration can vary depending on participant experience, class size and delivery method.

Onsite delivery allows participants to train using workplace equipment where appropriate.

Accreditation
Upon successful completion of the course requirements, students will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency:

Certificate delivery:
- Courses at our facilities: Certificates are issued on the day, with digital copies emailed to participants and employers (if applicable) the following business day.
- Courses at client sites: Certificates are issued within 7 business days, with digital copies emailed to participants and employers.
