About the Course

This course is suitable for people who are required to enter and work in a confined space.  Australian Standard 2865 requires all persons with tasks associated with a confined space shall be trained and competent including refreshing at appropriate intervals.

WorkSafe Connect has been delivering Confined Space Entry with Gas Test training for over 15 years and is one of Queensland’s leading suppliers of Confined Space and Confined Space Refresher courses.

This 1-day entry level course provides students with the skills and knowledge required to enter and work in a confined space and how to determine if it is safe for the proposed work.

The program is made up of the following nationally accredited units of competency:

  • RIIWHS202E - Enter and work in confined spaces
  • MSMWHS217 - Gas test atmospheres
  • MSMPER200 - Work in accordance with an issued permit (not subsidised by CSQ)

Who Should Attend

This course is for workers who enter, monitor, supervise, or support confined space activities. It is particularly relevant to those in construction, mining, resources, energy, utilities, government, water treatment, manufacturing, processing, industrial services, and shutdown or maintenance crews. 

Anyone undertaking confined space entry—as defined by AS 2865—must be trained and competent, including standby and rescue personnel, gas testers, and those working under a permit. This training supports compliance with the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld) and site-specific safety systems. 

CSQ Funding

You may be eligible to receive CSQ funding for this course if you work on a building & construction site in Queensland. If eligible, this course is fully subsidised with no out of pocket expense.

Course Description

Our Confined Space training will run students through planning and preparing to work in a confined space (including gas testing and interpretation of results), working in a confined space under an issued permit, exiting and cleaning up at task completion.

Key areas covered during the course include:

  • Legislation, Code of Practice and Australian Standard 2865
  • The definition of a confined spaces and entry conditions
  • The permit system
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Identification and control of hazards
  • Lockout and tag out methods of isolation
  • Atmospheric testing
  • Interpretation of testing results
  • Preparing for confined space work
  • Safety equipment
  • Safety and emergency procedures
  • Entry to and exit from a confined space
  • Work according to an issued permit

The skills and knowledge that you obtain during the course can be applied across a variety of industries.

Course Delivery Options

Training will be conducted by one of our experienced trainer assessors who have industry currency, strong knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and industry standards.

Practical and theoretical activities drive the training experience to ensure that the training is engaging, interesting and relevant.

Students must be physically and mentally capable of entering and moving within a confined space.

Accreditation 

All assessments are completed during the course – no assessment activities need to be completed prior to or post the training course.

Upon successful completion of all assessment items, students will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency:

  • RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in confined spaces
  • MSMWHS217 - Gas test atmospheres
  • MSMPER200 - Work in accordance with an issued permit

While there is no legislated requirement associated with the refreshing of this competency, industry best practice recommends refreshing your skills every 2-3 years. WorkSafe Connect offers regular 4-hour refresher courses.

Confined space refresher training is a requirement of Australian Standard AS2865.
