About the Course
Refresher – S123 / G189 – Site Supervisor
Also known as S123 / S1 S2 S3 / G189 / G1 G8 G9 / QMS / MSSS
WorkSafe Connect’s 1-day refresher course is a trainer-led program that is delivered either face-to-face or online (via Zoom in an electronic classroom).
This course is for those who need to refresh their previous S123 / G189 accreditation in a trainer-supported environment (as opposed to a self-paced online course with extensive evidence requirements and limited-to-no trainer interaction).
The 1-day program is interactive and activity-based – it refreshes practical knowledge and skills relating to risk management, effective communication and incident investigations.
To be eligible to attend, students must complete “Refresher Application Form” (details below) and provide the following evidence prior to course commencement:
- Previous accreditation (no more than 5 years)
- 2 x Risk Assessments
- 2 x Shift Reports
All assessments & activities are completed in the course – there is no post course evidence, or outside-of-classroom study required.
Under Queensland Legislation, Site Supervisors and Site Safety Health Representatives (SSHR) are statutory positions. The Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee has deemed it a requirement to hold 3 units of competency (S123 / G189) for these roles. Under the Queensland Coal Mining Regulations, these competencies must be refreshed every 5 years.
Students who meet the eligibility requirements and successfully complete the 1-day program will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following national units of competency:
- RIIRIS301E – Apply Risk Management Processes (S1 / G1)
- RIIWHS301E – Conduct Safety and Health Investigation (S2 / G8)
- RIICOM301E – Communicate Information (S3 / G9)

Who Should Attend
This course gives all supervisors (no matter the industry) the core skills required to lead their teams and ensure a safe work environment – covering essential legislative requirements, risk management processes, effective communication and incident investigation techniques.
It is relevant to all industries – including coal mining, metalliferous mining, quarrying, manufacturing, construction and general industry.
For those in Queensland in the mining industry who are appointed to the role of either a supervisor or health and safety representative, it is a legislative requirement that they hold the S123 / G189 units of competency as required by the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee.
For those who are refreshing their accreditation (which is required every 5 years) – see our 1-day S123 / G189 Refresher program – click here.
