About the course
Standard 11 is a mandated skill set of 6 nationally accredited units of competencies required for an individual to work on a coal mine in Queensland.
WorkSafe Connect offers a range of course options to align with a student’s level of experience and preferred delivery format:
- 2-DAY course - New Entrant - for new-to-industry students - face-to-face or online/virtual
- 1-DAY course - Experienced Entrant or Refresher - for students who have at least 3 months experience in the resources industry - face-to-face or online/virtual
There is no pre-course study and no-post course logbooks to complete. Students who successfully complete the program requirements will be issued a Statement of Attainment at the end of the course.
The course provides students with skills and knowledge to work safely in surface coal mining operations. Our custom-designed course includes a combination of theory questions (multiple choice and short answer) as well as various real-life & simulated practical activities throughout the program that reflect current industry trends.
Students who successfully complete the assessments will be issued with a Statement of Attainment at course completion. The accreditation awarded is RIISS00034 Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set, which covers the following 6 units of competency:

- RIIGOV201E - Comply with site work processes/procedures
- RIIWHS201E - Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
- RIIRIS201E - Conduct local risk control
- RIIERR205D - Apply initial response First Aid
- RIIERR302E - Respond to local emergencies and incidents

Who Should Attend
2-Day Course:
- Any 'new-to-resources-industry' person who is commencing work on a coal mine site in Queensland or is looking to find employment in the Queensland coal mining industry.
1-Day Course
- This course is designed for students who have previous resources industry experience (including those who currently work on a coal mine and need to refresh their Standard 11 accreditation).
- The course timeframe has been reduced to account for students’ prior knowledge & skills.
- Provide evidence of at least 3 months work experience in the resources industry in the last 5 years (e.g. site induction card, site training transcript, pay slip etc.). See "Before You Attend" section (Course Entry Requirements) for more details.
- Resources industry includes mining (both coal & metalliferous) and associated refineries, oil & gas and quarrying; the site experience can be from any site in Australia.
Course Description
The “Recognised Standard 11 – Training in Coal Mines” was issued by the Queensland Department of Resources and sets out the national units of competency that an individual must hold to work on a coal mine in Queensland. This is commonly referred to as the Standard 11, S11 or Generic Surface Mine Induction.
The key topics covered are:

- Health and Safety
- Emergency Awareness
- Apply Initial Response First Aid
- Equipment Safety
In addition to safety, our course provides students with an overview of life working on a coal mine.
Course Delivery Options
Training will be conducted face-to-face / in an electronic classroom by our experienced trainer assessors who have resources industry currency, strong knowledge of relevant legislation and industry standards.

Accreditation
There is no pre-course study or post-course requirements.
To be awarded the accreditation, students must successfully complete all theory and practical assessments throughout the course.
For the 1-day course, students must also submit the “Experienced Entrant Form” and supply the required evidence of your previous experience prior to course commencement.
Students will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for RIISS00034 Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set, containing the following units of competency:

- RIIGOV201E - Comply with site work processes/procedures
- RIIWHS201E - Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures

Under the Queensland Coal Mining Regulations 84, competency must be refreshed at least once every 5 years.

Course Entry Requirements
2-DAY COURSE (New Entrant)
No course entry requirements. Where learning support is required (for example, with language, literacy and/or numeracy), please let a member of the Operations team know ahead of time or discuss with your trainer prior to course commencement.
1-DAY COURSE (Experienced Entrant or Refresher)
Prior to course commencement, you will need to submit the “Experienced Entrant Form” and provide at least one item of evidence that proves at least 3 months work on a resources industry site in the last 5 years.
A resources industry site includes mining (both coal & metalliferous) and associated refineries, oil & gas and quarrying; the site experience can be from any site in Australia (not just Queensland).
We offer you two ways of submitting this form and evidence, please only choose one (1) option. These are:
- Webform - Please click here to complete the online form. This form is supported on all devices and you will need to upload the evidence before submitting.
- PDF - Please click here, complete the form and submit to us via email at info@worksafeconnect.com. Ensure you attach your evidence to the email.
If you do not have the required evidence or do not have resources industry experience, you should attend the 2-Day program.
You are welcome to book and pay for the course via our website and then submit the form & evidence in the following day / days. If it is determined you are not eligible for the 1-day program (based on the evidence provided), you will be offered the 2-day program and a gap fee will be payable. Alternatively, you may also request a refund prior to course commencement.
ONLINE COURSES
Students must have a basic level of computer skills - this ensures the course runs to time and the focus is on the course content rather than computer skills training.
To be eligible to attend a virtual course, you must complete a short assessment via our online Learner Portal at least 1 day prior to course commencement.
The assessment covers hardware and software setup as well as providing a basic understanding of Zoom and Learner Portal navigation.
Any student who has not successfully completed this 'Online Course Suitability Test' by course commencement will not be admitted to the course.
If you book and pay for the course via our website and it is determined you are not suitable for the virtual course delivery, you will be offered the face-to-face program. Alternatively, you may also request a refund prior to course commencement.
What to Bring
- Please ensure you bring your USI (unique student identifier) number with you – click here for more information about USI’s.
- Please wear comfortable clothing (i.e., long pants, shorts, t-shirt) and closed-in shoes. There is no requirement to wear PPE / high-vis.
- All course resources will be supplied.
For the online course via Zoom, you will also need to ensure you have the following items available for use during the course for the practical assessment simulations:
- Bin / bucket
- Tea towel / small blanket
- Gloves
- Glasses
- Bandage
- A mobile phone
- Blank paper
